Kumiko Bedside Table

How might we design convenient access to life’s essential accessories in bed while protecting an atmosphere of restfulness?

Hypothesis: Having access to the interior of the cabinet directly from the bed will allow users to store and charge their electronics, books, etc without having them out on display and cluttering a peaceful bedroom environment.

Process: Two small doors were made on the user-facing side of the cabinet using a kumiko lattice technique. These created a delicate, semi-opaque barrier between the interior and exterior of the cabinet. They opened to an upper shelf that would hold smaller objects the user would want to access directly from bed. The rest of the cabinet was kept open for larger items, such as books or computers.

Twenty-four precisely cut pieces fit together in a little grid to create this lattice work.

In order to design a piece of furniture that would last generations, housed dovetail, and mortise and tenon joinery was cut to join the panels and frame.
